How I chose my perfect blush

Finding The Perfect Blush

Everyone wants to look their best. Finding the perfect blush adds that extra something to complete your makeup look.

But looking for the perfect blush is no easy task. There are tons of articles that help you “look for the perfect blush” or perfect hair for your face shape. Sometimes these sites are helpful, but do they actually make you look better?

I am not a makeup pro- but in this post, I will try to see if I can find my perfect blush, or if it matters at all.

Blush 101 – types:

my perfect blush Three main blush types

There are 3 main types of blushes

  • Powder blush: A buildable blush that could look natural but can also be used in a dramatic look
  • Cream blush: A sheer blush for a natural look
  • Cheek stain: A blush that creates a glow within look, must blend quickly to prevent it from looking patchy

Before we get further, many sites use skin tones to help you find your perfect blush.

Skintone:

Finding your skin tone is a little tricky but the telltale way is:

  • Blue veins: Cool toned
  • Green veins: Warm toned
  • Both green and blue veins: You are neutral

Finding your perfect Blush: basics

In general, you want a blush same tone as your skin, If you are:

  • Warm toned you want warm blush for a natural look
  • Cool toned you want cool toned blush for a natural look
  • If you are lazy you can pick out a neutral tone blush or lip tone (the color of your inner lip)

However, if you want more of a pop, opt for the opposite toned blush.

Our goal is to find the blush color that can replicate your natural flush just like when you have just worked out.

For a more specific color

From my research

  • The fairer you are, the lighter or a nuder blush you want
  • The farther you stray from the lighter skin tones,  the more you want the blush to be pigmented
  • If you are on the end of the spectrum with dark tones, you want more of the red/ orange toned blush
  • If you have brown in your skin tone, you also want that in your blush too. ie Olive skintones should add some earthy tones to their blush
still can’t find your perfect blush?

Opt for a neutral blush

OR

According to Marc Jacobs makeup artist, pull down your lower lip. Try to match your lower lip as the blush.

Finding my Perfect Blush

I picked out some blushes from my blush collections to see if warm tones blushes actually matched me the best as most articles claimed.  I picked out some warm blushes, some cool toned and blushes that matched the color of my inner lip, all to see if warm-toned blushes matched me the best.

I did try to pack on the color, but as you see… they look almost the same. I didn’t use a filter or even wear much makeup, just to see which blush truly matched my skin tone.

Although they look quite similar, the warm-toned blush did look a little bit better compared to the cool toned blush. Just a little bit.

I am quite surprised as I usually opt for a cool toned blush. I think when I go for a natural look, I look best with warm tones blushes.  Depending on the other kinds of makeup I wear on a particular day, I can look better with other tones of blushes. BUT if you want a blush for a natural look, use a blush that matches your tone of skin.

Honestly,

after looking at my picture with different blushes side by side… It really doesn’t really matter what color blush you wear. Maybe, you wore a different color than your “best blush color”, but it still looks great. Who cares what articles say, pick your favorite color.
